YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) - Joint logisticians from across the service branches came together for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) training at NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) headquarters on board Yokosuka Naval Base, June 16-27. The class, Ammo-62 Technical Transportation of Hazardous Materials, is taught by instructors from the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) and gives each student 80 hours of instruction culminating in official certification. 'This course provides personnel from all services detailed technical information pertaining to all phases of transportation for hazardous materials and satisfies the mandatory training for personnel whom certify hazardous materials and conduct function-specific training for personnel as outlined in the Defense Transportation Regulation (DOD 4500.9-R),' said Mark Galiano, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka regional HAZMAT management division director. 'The course content includes governing regulations for the transportation of hazardous materials by land, vessel, commercial or military air shipping.'
DLA Distribution Yokosuka, Japan paid to bring the training to Yokosuka while NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka hosted the event. 'DLA and FLC Yokosuka have partnered together to offer this course to all military and civilian personnel stationed throughout the Western Pacific Region for the past three years,' said Galiano. 'This symbiotic relationship resolves DLA issues with lack of adequate hosting facilities and simultaneously allows costs avoidance for FLC in expenses associated with ordering the class for required personnel.'
A total of 35 students took part in this year's training, added Galiano. 'The students derive from commands ranging from Okinawa, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Camp Fuji, Yokota Air Base, Sasebo Naval Base, USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS Lassen (DDG 82) and from our own backyard, Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka Environmental,' said Galiano. 'The course material can be very challenging but also very rewarding to graduating students.' The NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka HAZMAT team had seven students in attendance looking to bring their new found skills to the workplace.

'FLC Yokosuka's HAZMAT personnel continue to improve service to our customers through responsive inventory management, cost effective material re-utilization and in-depth training' said Lt. Travis Colleran, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka regional services director. 'Taking this newly developed skill set back to the shop will benefit both our customers and the command. I look forward to seeing their hard work over these past two weeks pay off.'
At the end of the training evolution it was the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and civilian logisticians who walked away with a certification in the transportation of HAZMAT, which in the business of moving supplies and material around this highly expansive area of operations, makes these graduates a hot commodity. As the Western Pacific region's largest U.S. Navy logistics command, just 26 miles due south of Tokyo, the NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka enterprise networks more than 20 sites spanning from points in the north Pacific to the Indian Ocean with a mission to serve the Asia Pacific Region's forward deployed maritime warfighter with 24/7 operational logistics support across the U.S. Navy's largest geographical AOR.
